Main project
The Pollinator is a flightless creature designed around moving through dense areas of tall flowering plants. Its extremely long legs allow the body to stay elevated above the vegetation while it steps between stems and flowers.
Rather than combining animals directly, I focused on how anatomy could develop around a specific ecological function. The creature uses specialized fuzzy structures on its lower legs to collect pollen, gripping feet to stabilize itself on plants, and an elongated feeding organ to reach deeper into flowers.
Design process
I began by looking at insects with unusual proportions and locomotion, including crane flies, water striders and stilt-legged flies, alongside plants with long stems, exposed roots and unusual flower structures.
The design gradually developed from a relatively recognizable insect into something more unfamiliar. I exaggerated the contrast between a heavy, armored upper body and extremely thin legs, while giving different parts of the anatomy clear functions.
Color development
I explored several different palettes before choosing the muted olive and purple version. The sickly greens and dark purples helped the creature feel biological and slightly uncomfortable, while the lighter pollen-collecting structures separate visually from the harder armored anatomy.
Anatomy / function
Armor
Overlapping plates protect the upper body while leaving the joints flexible.
Pollen collectors
Soft structures around the lower legs brush against flowers and collect pollen as the creature moves through vegetation.
Gripping feet
The feet are designed to hold onto thin stems and unstable surfaces.
Feeding organ
The elongated front structure allows the creature to reach nectar or nutrients deep inside flowers without lowering its entire body.
